Manchester United's (Man U) performance has fallen far short of expectations, leading to significant controversy over manager Ruben Amorim's decision not to retain Marcus Rashford (28, Aston Villa) on the team.

Rashford, a product of the Manchester United youth system, was loaned to Aston Villa during this winter transfer window. Although the loan lasts until the end of the season, it includes a permanent transfer option, making it likely that he will not return to Manchester United.

Even if Aston Villa decides to forgo permanently acquiring Rashford, the possibility of him playing for Manchester United next season is low due to the conflict between Rashford and manager Amorim.

Rashford began to lose his place gradually after manager Amorim took over. Amorim excluded Rashford from the roster ahead of the Manchester derby against Manchester City in December of last year, effectively removing him from his season plans.

However, Rashford has been making his presence felt at Aston Villa. He has amassed nine attacking points (three goals and six assists) in 15 matches, establishing himself as a key player for the team.

In particular, Rashford contributed to a 3-2 victory in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League (UCL) quarter-finals against Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). He assisted Ezri Konsa's winning goal in the 57th minute, helping the team secure the win. Rashford's strong performances are leading to criticism directed at manager Amorim.

Former Liverpool player Danny Murphy appeared on British TalkSport and, when asked if it was a mistake for manager Amorim to let Rashford go, responded affirmatively.

Murphy stated, "Personally, I think it was a mistake. The forwards currently remaining at Manchester United are underperforming," and added, "I believe a capable manager could have revitalized Rashford, no matter how difficult the team situation may be," indirectly criticizing manager Amorim.

He further emphasized, "When taking over as a manager, the first task is to protect oneself and achieve results," asserting that "in that regard, Rashford is better than any other forward at Manchester United."

The Manchester United forward lineup is not performing well. Antony was loaned to Real Betis in January, and Amad Diallo is sidelined due to an ankle injury. The team is effectively reliant on Alejandro Garnacho and Joshua Zirkzee.

The team's ranking at 14th place is intensifying criticism directed at manager Amorim. Manchester United has never finished 14th in the Premier League before. They are currently experiencing their worst ranking in 51 years, since finishing 21st during the 1973-1974 season, when they were relegated.

Additionally, manager Amorim has recorded only 12 wins (with 9 draws and 11 losses) across a total of 32 matches since taking charge. Including the UEFA Europa League, he has yet to secure a victory in the last four matches, with two draws and two losses.

However, Rashford's future is also uncertain. Aston Villa is hesitant to trigger Rashford's permanent transfer option due to his high wage demands. Unai Emery, the Villa manager, also noted that the decision will depend on the current situation and developments in the coming weeks.

If the transfer to Aston Villa falls through, Rashford will need to return to Manchester United. Subsequently, it seems Manchester United will decide on his transfer situation. Rashford's contract with Manchester United expires in the summer of 2028.
