Gus Poite, head coach of Jeonbuk Hyundai, was not satisfied even with the victory.
Jeonbuk defeated Ansan Greeners 3-0 after a hard-fought extra time in the third round of the 2025 Hana Bank Korea Cup held at Jeonju World Cup Stadium on the evening of the 16th. Although they did not score in regular time, they secured the win with a multi-goal performance from Compaño and a sealing goal from Jeon Jin-woo in extra time.
As a result, Jeonbuk became the winner of the first matchup in the history of both teams. Now, Jeonbuk's next opponent will be Daejeon Hana Citizen, who advanced by defeating Gangneung City Football Club. Jeonbuk and Daejeon will face off next month at Daejeon World Cup Stadium.
Jeonbuk took the initiative from the start and aimed for an opening goal, but could not fulfill that aim. Lee Seung-woo and Kim Jin-kyu made several threatening shots, but all missed the target. Ansan also started aggressively in the second half looking for the first goal, but could not find the net until the final whistle was blown at 90 minutes.
Jeonbuk scored three goals in extra time. In the added time of the first half of extra time, Compaño broke the scoreless tie with a penalty, and in the 9th minute of the second half of extra time, Compaño scored again with a pass from Jeon Jin-woo. Additionally, in the 15th minute of the second half of extra time, Jeon Jin-woo scored a sealing goal, leading to Ansan's downfall.
After the match, Coach Poite noted, "There were not many positive aspects in terms of performance. Still, we have advanced to the next round. This match felt like a typical cup competition. Lower league teams tend to play more defensively, while teams from higher leagues try to break that down. Anyway, we advanced to the next round, and I have nothing more to say about that."
He also added, "I am satisfied with today's starting lineup. There are no excuses. Kim Jung-hun played in more than 10 matches last season, and Choi Cheol-soon, Yoon Je-woon, Kim Young-bin, and Kim Jin-kyu are all veteran players. Tiago, Song Min-kyu, and Lee Seung-woo are experienced players as well. I have no regrets. However, I think we need to consider the lineup for Sunday’s match. It will be a tough decision. Still, the most important thing is the match. If they show their skills well on the field, they will have the opportunity for the next match."
It was the first time Coach Poite faced a K League 2 team. He stated, "Because Ansan is a lower league team, they approached the match without anything to lose against us. Instead of being aggressive in the first half, they focused on blocking shots. I told the players in the pre-match meeting that if we didn’t score quickly, the opponent would gain confidence."
Then, Coach Poite remarked, "During my playing days in Spain and England, there were always surprising results. But fortunately, there were no surprises today. Rather than reflecting on today’s match, I will focus on the match against Daegu on Sunday." He added, "I want to say to the Ansan players that they really worked hard. I saw them leave everything on the field to the point of cramping. Since they put in so much effort for 90 minutes, the extra time must have been tough for them. Although Ansan was eliminated today, they put in a performance to be proud of."
Ahn Hyun-beom was unexpectedly left out of the lineup entirely. Coach Poite explained, "It was just a decision. There are no injury issues. He has been training well. It’s not just a simple decision. If Jin Tae-ho had been excluded today, there would have been questions about him. Decisions always need to be made, and putting together a lineup is difficult. Although Ahn Hyun-beom hasn't played much in games, he has been working hard in training. I think he’ll get an opportunity soon."
