Gangwon FC broke its losing streak with a victory over Gwangju FC.
Gangwon defeated Gwangju 1-0 at the Hana Bank K League 1 2025 Round 8 home match held at Chuncheon Songam Sports Town on the 13th.
With this victory, Gangwon escaped from a recent three-game losing streak. They increased their chances of climbing out of the lower ranks with a record of 3 wins, 1 draw, and 4 losses (10 points). They also extended their winning streak to three games against Gwangju.
Gwangju, on the other hand, had its coach Lee Jeong-hyo return after being sent off in the Round 6 match against Daejeon Hana Citizen, but they could not celebrate as they failed to secure a victory, ending with a record of 3 wins, 4 draws, and 2 losses (13 points).
Gangwon enjoyed an early goal, taking the lead relatively quickly. In the 16th minute of the first half, Lee Yoo-hyun broke through on the right flank and delivered a cross, which was finished off by Choi Byeong-chan with a header, marking the opening goal.
After being silent for three consecutive matches without scoring, Gangwon finally found the back of the net.
Choi Byeong-chan transferred to Gangwon from Bucheon FC in K League 2 ahead of this season and scored his first goal since joining the team.
In response, Gwangju's Asani and Ahn Young-kyu launched threatening shots but failed to finish. Gangwon's goalkeeper Lee Gwang-hyun also made impressive saves.
As the second half began, Gwangju introduced Bruno and Lee Kang-hyun. Gangwon responded by bringing off Choi Byeong-chan and substituting in Kang Jun-hyuk.
Gwangju sought to change the atmosphere by utilizing Gabriel and Park In-hyeok as substitutes in the 22nd minute of the second half. Two minutes later, Gangwon substituted in 'the same name as Gwangju's foreign player Gabriel' Gabriel for Lee Sang-heon.
Gangwon's Gabriel was substituted again with Kovacevic in the 42nd minute of the second half, ending his brief appearance.
Both teams actively used their substitutes and aimed for a goal until the end of the second half, but no additional goals were scored. The match concluded with a 1-0 victory for Gangwon.
