Son Heung-min (33, Tottenham) is once again the focus regarding his contract renewal. Ange Postecoglou, the Tottenham manager (59), stated that there have not been any specific discussions about a renewal but expressed his desire to work with Son if he stays.
Postecoglou was asked about Son's situation during an official press conference held ahead of the Premier League match against Wolverhampton on the 13th (Korea time). He said, "Contract issues will be discussed at the appropriate time," adding, "There is currently no significant update."
He continued, "Tottenham activated Son's one-year extension option this January, but no further negotiations have taken place since then," and noted, "Discussions about a renewal will be held at the end of the season in line with the overall direction of the club. If I continue to lead the team, Son will also be part of that process," he said.
Son was originally set to have his contract expire at the end of this season. However, the club’s decision to exercise the option has extended his contract until the 2024-2025 season.
His contract renewal issue had been relatively low-key for some time. However, comments by Postecoglou during this press conference have brought Son's future back into focus.
Particularly, reports suggest that Daniel Levy, the chairman of Tottenham, may dismiss Postecoglou if the team fails to win any titles this season. This has grabbed the attention of fans, especially as the manager expressed his willingness to work with Son.
The British media outlet "Sports Mole" also acknowledged the situation. Highlighting the contract expiration date of Son, it analyzed, "Tottenham must transfer Son this summer or next January to have one last cashing-out opportunity."
However, the outlet also remarked, "It would be best for Tottenham to secure a contract renewal with Son. He has shown consistent productivity this season, recording 10 assists and 7 goals, and has achieved double-digit attacking points in the Premier League for nine consecutive seasons."
Additionally, "Sports Mole" predicted, "Son has also been a mentoring figure to young players like Mikey Moore and Wilson Odoberto. Given this situation, it seems unlikely they would put him on the market this summer."
"Sports Mole" concluded, "If Son can maintain his current skills and physical condition for the 2025-2026 season, there is a possibility of a short-term contract renewal. Even if the team remains trophyless this season, his potential for development could enhance that likelihood."
Meanwhile, Son is set to travel for the UEFA Europa League quarterfinal second leg against Frankfurt on the 18th. The first leg ended in a 1-1 draw.
