The Major League Baseball Cincinnati Reds recorded three consecutive 0-1 losses. This is a rare record for Major League Baseball that has not been seen in 65 years.
On the 4th (Korean time), Cincinnati lost 0-1 against the Milwaukee Brewers in an away game held at American Family Field in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Starting pitcher Nick Lodolo performed his part with 6⅔ innings, allowing 4 hits, striking out 4, and giving up 1 earned run (unearned), but ended up taking the loss.
Cincinnati saw its first batter, T.J. Friedl, reach base with a walk in the 1st inning, but the subsequent batters struck out, popped out, and popped out again. The 2nd inning ended in a three-up, three-down. After one out in the 3rd inning, José Trevino advanced to scoring position with a double to left field. However, Friedl's surprise bunt resulted in a ground out to the pitcher. With two outs and runners on second and third, Matt McLain reached base on a walk, but Elly De La Cruz struck out.
Again, there was a three-up, three-down in the 4th inning. The 5th inning also ended in a three-up, three-down. The 6th inning also concluded with a three-up, three-down. After one out in the 7th inning, Jamer Candelario singled to right, and Gavin Lux walked to create a chance with runners on first and second. However, Spencer Steer flew out to center field, and Santiago Espinal also flew out to center field, ending the inning without a score.
In the 8th inning, after getting on base due to an error by the opponent with two outs, Cincinnati was unable to mount a significant counterattack. In the 9th inning, during the final at-bat, Cristian Encarnacion's well-hit ball was caught for a line-out by the left fielder. Candelario's hit also resulted in a line-drive out to the left fielder. Lux struck out, and the game ended with a 0-1 loss.
Cincinnati, during the bottom of the 4th inning, advanced a runner to third base due to a throwing error by the pitcher after one out. They conceded their only run of the day on a timely hit with two outs and a runner on third.
On the 1st, Cincinnati achieved a resounding victory with a score of 14-3 against the Texas Rangers at home, hitting three home runs. However, on the 2nd, they lost 0-1 to Texas with 4 hits and no runs. They gave up 1 run in the top of the 1st inning, and the score of 0-1 held until the end of the game. On the 3rd, Cincinnati lost 0-1 against Texas again with 3 hits and no runs.
Three consecutive 0-1 losses mark the 6th rare record in Major League Baseball history. However, since the live-ball era (after 1920), this has occurred only once before. In 1960, the Philadelphia Phillies lost three consecutive games 0-1 from May 12 to 14.
According to Elias Sports Bureau, no team in Major League Baseball history has ever lost four consecutive games 0-1. Sarah Langs of MLB.com noted, "Cincinnati is the 6th team in Major League Baseball history to suffer three consecutive 0-1 losses. In 1960, Philadelphia; in 1917, Pittsburgh; in 1909, Washington; in 1909, St. Louis; in 1908, Brooklyn."
Lux, traded from the Dodgers to Cincinnati last winter, recorded just 1 hit in 7 at-bats during the losing streak, leaving his season batting average at .200 (4 hits in 20 at-bats). While suffering three consecutive 0-1 losses, Cincinnati's Carson Spiers, Hunter Greene, and Lodolo combined to strike out 17 batters while allowing only 10 hits, 3 walks, and 3 earned runs (2 earned).
Cincinnati manager Terry Francona said, "They are working hard to get hits. They are fighting. When we win, it's 'us,' and when we lose, there won't be a situation of 'them.' We will make it together and resolve it together."
Catcher Trevino remarked, "Such things always happen throughout the baseball season. At some point, everything will change. Right now, the pitchers are doing really well. The hitters are also working hard. This situation will turn around. At some point, we will all be together. The baseball season flows that way."
Cincinnati will face Milwaukee on the 5th. Starting pitcher Nick Martinez is set to take the mound. He recorded a loss with 4 earned runs in 6 innings in his first game. Milwaukee's starting pitcher is Tyler Alexander, a swingman who alternates between bullpen and starting roles and has recorded 2 earned runs in 3⅓ innings over 2 games this year, with an earned run average of 5.40. Will Cincinnati be able to score a run in the game on the 5th?
