The Korea Sports Council (Chairman Yoo Seung-min) is currently holding the '2025 Local Sports Council Tour Meeting' to revitalize local sports.
This meeting, which started on the 17th of last month in Incheon, is scheduled to take place in Seoul, Gangwon, Gyeonggi, Daegu, Ulsan, Busan, Gyeongnam, Gwangju, Chungbuk, Sejong, Chungnam, and 12 other cities and provinces until March, with meetings planned for Daejeon, Gyeongbuk, Jeonbuk, Jeonnam, and Jeju in April.
Chairman Yoo Seung-min invited local sports council presidents and city and county sports council presidents to hear first-hand accounts and delivered sincere opinions without reservation to ensure the development of sports in South Korea and local sports.
Athletes and coaches raised concerns about ▲the absolute lack of training time due to mandatory class hours and increased risk of injury, ▲the worsening conditions of school sports teams leading to a crisis in talent discovery and nurturing, ▲the need for improved treatment of athletes and coaches and recognition of professionalism, ▲strengthening the link between recreational sports and professional sports, and ▲requests for support in injury treatment and rehabilitation.
In response, Chairman Yoo Seung-min continued the question-and-answer session based on his own experiences, explaining the limitations of existing laws and systems, ways to secure budgets, and methods to overcome constraints, while sharing opinions.
In particular, he announced measures for the financial stabilization of local sports councils, which are the foundation for athlete discovery and nurturing, and stated he would actively seek cooperation from various stakeholders, including the government, National Assembly, local governments, local councils, the Ministry of Education, and education offices.
The Korea Sports Council plans to check the current issues of local sports based on the discussions held during this meeting and establish action plans for each issue.
