A man in his 60s who killed his son with a homemade firearm denied additional attempted murder charges.
According to police on the 27th, the Incheon Yeonsu Police Station summoned Mr. A (62), who was arrested on charges of murder and other offenses, for about two hours of questioning that afternoon. During the sixth round of questioning, police focused on whether Mr. A had a specific motive for his crime and if there were any additional murder attempts.
Mr. A reportedly denied the attempted murder charge, stating in the police investigation, 'I only intended to kill my son.' Police believe that at the time of the crime, Mr. A intended to kill not only his son but also four other individuals present at the scene: his daughter-in-law, two grandchildren, and a family friend (a foreign tutor).
Previously, Mr. A stated in the early stages of the investigation that he committed the crime due to family conflict. However, during additional profiling investigations, he claimed, 'I was listed as an employee in the family company and received a salary of about 3 million won per month, but payment ceased at some point last year.' However, the bereaved family countered this claim, stating, 'Mr. A was receiving living expenses from his ex-wife, and his son was also providing support.'
To verify the conflicting statements, police obtained a search warrant related to Mr. A on the 25th and are examining his financial accounts. Police plan to verify the specific timeline of Mr. A's criminal plans and motives based on the search warrant obtained for portal site search records, medical records, currency details, and other information. A police official noted, 'Not all the seized items have been received yet' and 'Depending on the situation, Mr. A may be summoned for further questioning.'
Mr. A is accused of shooting and killing his son with a homemade firearm around 9:31 p.m. on the 20th at his 33rd-floor apartment in Songdo-dong, Yeonsu-gu, Incheon. At Mr. A's home in Dobong-gu, Seoul, 15 flammable items including a bottle of thinner and a detergent container were found, and it was investigated that a fire timer was set for noon on the 21st, the day after the murder.
The Korean National Police Agency launched an inspection on the 26th to investigate whether there were deficiencies in the initial response to the incident. At the time of the incident, Mr. B's wife urgently requested an emergency rescue at 112 while fleeing into a room with her children around 9:31 p.m. on the 20th.
After receiving the report, the police officer issued a 'code 0' response order, the highest level of urgency in the manual, but it was confirmed that the commanding officer of the jurisdictional police station did not arrive at the scene for over 70 minutes. It was revealed that the situation manager did not even know the internal manual stating they should respond to the scene and only arrived at the scene after the police special forces had entered, at around 10:43 p.m.
