Since the heavy rains that have continued for five days starting on the 16th, 12 people have died and 8 have gone missing nationwide. The rain, which has caused significant casualties, will fall in the metropolitan area and Gangwon on the morning of the 20th, but will mostly show a lull. After that, a heat wave and tropical nights are expected, with occasional showers in some areas.
According to the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and the National Fire Agency, as of 10 a.m. on the 20th, there have been a total of 20 casualties due to the heavy rain since the 16th, including 12 deaths and 8 missing. The majority of casualties occurred in Sancheong, South Gyeongsang Province. The deceased include ▲ 8 from Sancheong, South Gyeongsang Province, ▲ 2 from Seosan, South Chungcheong Province, ▲ 1 from Dangjin, South Chungcheong Province, and ▲ 1 from Osan, Gyeonggi Province, while the missing persons include ▲ 6 from Sancheong and ▲ 2 from Buk-gu, Gwangju.
The National Fire Agency noted, "So far, there have been 8 deaths, 2 serious injuries, and 6 missing persons in the Sancheong area" and reported that "a total of 58 people have been rescued." In the Sancheong region, rescue and first aid operations are ongoing, and the casualty status may change.
The damage to facilities includes 1,920 public facilities such as road flooding, landslide loss, and river facility collapse, and 2,234 private facilities including buildings and agricultural land flooding. There were temporary power outages in 92 areas, of which 14 have not yet been restored.
So far, it has been reported that about 13,000 people have evacuated. Of these, 4,638 are still unable to return home. In particular, at 1 p.m. the previous day, Sancheong County issued an emergency evacuation order for all residents (about 33,000). This is the first time in history that a single local government has recommended evacuation for all areas under its jurisdiction due to extreme heavy rain, rather than specific towns or districts.
As of 5 p.m. that day, general roads in areas such as Sancheong and Jinju in South Gyeongsang Province, Chuncheon in Gangwon Province, and Pocheon in Gyeonggi Province have been blocked. Train services have been suspended on three sections including the Gyeongbu Line (Dongdaegu-Busan), Honam Line (Iksan-Mokpo), and Gyeongjeon Line (Samrangjin-Gwangju Songjeong), and there are no cancellations of flights.
Rain is expected to fall heavily in the metropolitan area and Gangwon Province until the morning of Sunday the 20th. As of 7 a.m. that day, heavy rain warnings have been issued for Yeoncheon, Pocheon, and Gapyeong in Gyeonggi Province, and rain advisories for Hwacheon, Yanggu Flatland, Inje Flatland, and the northern mountainous areas of Gangwon.
From late afternoon that day, there may be showers in parts of Gyeonggi, Gangwon, Chungcheong, and North Gyeongsang Provinces. In many places, rain could exceed 60 mm per hour. Occasional rain is expected in Jeju until that afternoon.
After the rain stops, a hot 'heat wave' with a feels-like temperature of over 33 degrees Celsius is expected.
