On the 16th, a video was released depicting the accident that occurred in Osan due to heavy rains causing the retaining wall of an overpass to collapse. It took 9 seconds for the wall to collapse first, followed by the concrete railing that fell on top of vehicles. A male driver in his 40s died in the incident.
On the 17th, a black box video recorded from a vehicle at the accident scene showed that at around 7:04 p.m. on the 16th, the top of the retaining wall of the overpass at the Gajang intersection in Osan began to bend down toward the lower road.
Bricks from the retaining wall burst out to the lower road and poured down, burying the vehicles traveling on the road. Four seconds later, the concrete railing, which was installed on top of the retaining wall, tilted down and fell onto the bricks that had fallen.
The concrete railing also covered the front part of the vehicle from which the black box video was being recorded. This vehicle came to a stop right in front of the accident scene, and the driver was reported to have not sustained serious injuries.
Upon the occurrence of the accident, rescuers who arrived on the scene discovered A, who was in the vehicle in a state of no breathing and no pulse, around 8:50 p.m. However, the rescue operation was not quickly advanced, as it was carried out by using an excavator to remove concrete debris and team members shoveling dirt. A was rescued in cardiac arrest around 10 p.m. and was transported to a nearby hospital but died.
Currently, traffic is restricted in the area around the Gajang intersection. Police are rerouting vehicles at key points near the collapse site.
