The ongoing heatwave is causing livestock deaths to spread nationwide.
According to the 'Daily Situation of Public Safety Management' issued by the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters on the 12th, 78,630 livestock died in a single day on the 10th. Among them, 77,535 were poultry such as chickens and ducks. The remaining 1,095 were pigs.
The cumulative number of livestock deaths from May 20 until the 10th of this year is 604,636. Considering that the cumulative number of livestock deaths during the same period last year was 53,238, this figure represents an increase of approximately 11.4 times.
The previous day, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety urgently supported 35 billion won in earmarked tax (special) for disaster safety management. This aims to address the difficulties faced by vulnerable groups and livestock farms amid the severe heatwave continuing nationwide.
The earmarked tax (special) for disaster safety management being provided this time will be used for ▲providing cooling items for vulnerable groups such as elderly individuals living alone and residents of goshiwon (small boarding houses) ▲supporting heat prevention items for outdoor workers, such as bottled water and cooling towels ▲installing shade structures and other heat mitigation facilities ▲and supporting livestock farms with shading nets and water sprinklers among other uses. In addition, it will also be used as a budget to secure additional water sources, particularly in the severely drought-hit Gangwon region.
