A scene of camping enthusiasts drilling holes in the asphalt to set up tents in public parking lots has been captured, drawing criticism. Since last year, camping and cooking have been banned in public parking lots, but illegal activities continue during the vacation season.
On the 9th, a post titled 'Camping enthusiasts causing nuisance by damaging public facilities' appeared on an online community.
The author, referred to as A, posted a photo, believed to have been taken on May 29, showing a camping enthusiast securing a tent to the asphalt floor of the public parking lot at the breakwater of Haegeumgang Beach in Geoje, Gyeongnam.
The photo shows a man wearing a hat drilling a hole in the asphalt floor in front of a large tent located on one side of the parking lot.
A said, 'This is the actual situation of drilling in the parking lot,' adding, 'This is not drilling; it’s like drilling a hole in common sense.'
On the 10th, another internet user posted a photo of a tent secured to the asphalt at the same location.
The author B remarked, 'Haegeumgang Beach breakwater,’ saying, 'How can you pack down on asphalt? You should pierce your hand with the electric drill that you carry around for this.' The tent in the photo posted by B was lighter in color and different from the one posted by A.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport has enforced an amendment to the parking lot law since September of last year, banning camping, cooking, and lighting fires in public parking lots to prevent issues such as lack of parking space, noise, and littering.
If a person is caught camping or cooking in a parking lot established by national agencies, local governments, public institutions, local public enterprises, or local public corporations, they will face fines of 300,000 won for the first offense, 400,000 won for the second, and 500,000 won for the third offense or more.
