A marlin measuring 3 meters in length and weighing 226 kilograms was caught off the coast of Samcheok, Gangwon, attracting attention.
Jeong Yeon-cheol, a city councilor from Samcheok, posted a photo of the marlin caught by the fishing vessel S in front of Jeongrajin on his social media on the 10th.
The marlin caught that morning was consigned for sale at 60,000 won.
Marlin is a species widely distributed in tropical and temperate regions, including the Pacific, Indian, and Atlantic oceans. In Korea, it is found mostly off the southern coast and Jeju Island, and is hard to see along the East Coast.
Recently, actor Ryu Soo-young sparked interest by fishing for a marlin in the Caribbean on a variety show.
In October last year, it was reported through foreign media that a woman in her 30s surfing in Indonesia was killed when a marlin attacked her chest.
Marlin is a high-end species typically eaten as steak or sashimi. In particular, the belly meat is used as a top-quality ingredient.
Meanwhile, a bluefin tuna weighing about 200 kilograms was also caught off Jeongrajin that day, along with the marlin.
Councilor Jeong Yeon-cheol said, "I go to the port every morning to check the catch and hear the difficulties of fishermen, and I was surprised to see a marlin caught this morning."
He added, "I asked around whether it was due to climate change, and they said only 1 to 2 marlins are caught in a year."
