A heat wave warning has been issued in most regions of the country, with scorching temperatures around 35 degrees Celsius. Local governments are concentrating their administrative efforts to prevent safety accidents due to the heat.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration on the 10th, a heat wave warning has been issued in most regions of the country, except for the eastern coastal areas.
As of 11 a.m., the highest felt temperature of the day was 34.2 degrees in Hwasun, Jeollanam-do; 34 degrees in Paju, Gyeonggi-do (Tanhyeon); 33.5 degrees in Jukdo, Hongseong, Chungcheongnam-do; 33.3 degrees in Daejeong, Jeju; and 32.5 degrees in Changnyeong, Gyeongsangnam-do (Dochun).
Most of these areas experienced a tropical night, with temperatures remaining above 25 degrees overnight.
The Korea Meteorological Administration forecasted that the highest felt temperature would rise to around 35 degrees for the time being.
Damage due to the heat wave is also emerging. On National Highway 5, connecting Jecheon and Danyang in Chungcheongbuk-do, 'plastic deformation' occurred, with asphalt being pushed out or bulging in several areas.
Plastic deformation is primarily caused by overloading of large vehicles or a sudden increase in traffic during the summer. It is reported to occur as the petroleum-based asphalt heats up.
In Jeollanam-do, 20 farms reported the death of 20,597 livestock the previous day. Chickens accounted for the highest number, with 19,629 dead across 11 farms, followed by 968 pigs from 9 farms.
Local governments are focusing on preventing safety accidents. They are installing new shade structures, providing rest areas, activating task forces, and offering free lending of parasols as part of their responses to the heat wave.
They are also promoting support for cooling facilities for farms and measures to prevent sun damage to livestock and crops.
Corporations are also stepping up their responses to the heat wave. Samsung Heavy Industries and Hanwha Ocean, located in Geoje, Gyeongsangnam-do, are focusing on lowering workplace temperatures during the sweltering season. They are also providing various cooling supplies and nutritious meals to workers.
