A resident's pet dog in a residential apartment in Changwon, Gyeongnam, alerted the family to a fire that broke out in the early morning.
According to the Changwon Fire Department, a fire occurred at around 3:37 a.m. the day before, in the multipurpose room of an apartment on the 9th floor in Jinhae District, Changwon.
At the time, the family was sound asleep, but the pet dog "Mongsil" (Pomeranian) suddenly barked, waking them up.
The awakened resident witnessed the fire starting near the kimchi refrigerator in the multipurpose room and quickly extinguished it with a household fire extinguisher.
The fire authorities identified that some parts of the kimchi refrigerator and storage cabinet had burned, resulting in property damage of about 100,000 won.
A representative from the Changwon Fire Department noted, "The pet dog detected the fire early, alerting the residents, and thanks to the quick use of the fire extinguisher, major damage was averted."
He further explained, "This is a case that well illustrates the importance of early fire response and the need for firefighting facilities in dwellings."
