The special investigation team led by Kim Keon-hee is conducting a search and seizure at the Korean National Police Agency on the 8th. This is to obtain police investigation materials concerning allegations that Jeon Seong-bae, a former monk, used his friendship with Kim Keon-hee, the wife of former President Yoon Suk-yeol, to cover up investigations related to the Unification Church.
On that day, the special investigation team stated in a notice sent to the press that it is “executing a search warrant at the Korean National Police Agency.” It added that this is “to receive related materials in the context of cooperation.” The implication is that the Korean National Police Agency is not the subject of the investigation but is conducting the search to obtain investigation-related materials.
The reason the special investigation team initiated the search at the Korean National Police Agency on that day is reportedly to obtain materials related to allegations that Jeon Seong-bae, a former monk, covered up police investigations into the Unification Church's officials involved in a gambling scandal.
The police are known to have conducted an investigation around 2022 concerning allegations that Han Hak-ja, the leader of the Unification Church, and other executives were gambling at casinos in Las Vegas, USA, between 2008 and 2011. However, it has been reported that the police investigation has not progressed since then.
Around the same time, it was reported that Yoon Young-ho, a former Deputy Minister who was an official of the Unification Church, had recorded a conversation in which he said he was told to prepare for a potential search and seizure by the police. Yoon, who said he had a private meeting with then President-elect Yoon Suk-yeol at a Unification Church event in March 2022, is also facing allegations of sending Chanel bags and other items to Kim Keon-hee through the monk.
