Eight out of ten office workers are planning domestic travel this summer, and they are expected to expend an average of about 540,000 won per person on vacation.
According to a survey conducted on 800 office workers by the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry on the 30th regarding 'Summer Vacation Plans and Policy Issues', 81.6% responded that they have plans for summer vacation. Among them, 83.5% preferred domestic travel.
The most common travel plan was '2 nights and 3 days' at 38.9%, followed by '3 nights and 4 days' (22.7%) and '1 night and 2 days' (21.3%). The preferred regions were Gangwon (34.9%), Gyeongsang (27.9%), and Jeju (22.4%). The most popular overseas destinations were Japan (50.9%) and Southeast Asia (45.4%).
This year's average vacation expenditure for office workers is 535,000 won, an increase of 9.4% from last year (489,000 won). By region, Seoul has the highest at 776,000 won, while Jeonnam has the lowest at 393,000 won. By age group, those in their 30s had the highest average expenditure at 666,000 won, followed by those in their 20s at 527,000 won, 40s at 494,000 won, and 50s at 446,000 won.
Regarding vacation activities, 'rest and enjoying nature' (49.3%) was the most common, followed by food exploration (21.0%) and sightseeing (20.2%). In response to a question comparing summer vacation expenditure to last year, 32.2% said they would 'spend more,' 26.8% said they would 'spend less,' and 41.0% planned to 'spend about the same.'
Kim Min-seok, head of the distribution and logistics policy team at KORCHAM, noted, "Given that the government recently unveiled an active supplementary budget plan, we must not miss the opportunity to connect support policies, such as accommodation discounts and local gift certificates, with stimulating consumption during the vacation season."
