It was found that 48.8% of the sales of franchise stores in Seoul, including chicken, coffee, and burgers, occur through delivery platforms. Additionally, it was surveyed that 24% of the money earned from these deliveries is paid as fees to the platforms.
On the 26th, the Seoul Metropolitan Government announced an online platform status survey containing this information.
This survey was conducted on 186 franchise stores from October last year to March this year.
According to the survey results announced that day, franchise stores generate revenue primarily from delivery platforms (48.8%), in-store sales (43.3%), and mobile gift certificates (7.9%).
By delivery platform, as of October last year, Baedal Minjok (Baemin1) accounted for the highest share at 42.6%, followed by Coupang Eats with 42.1%.
However, the increase in revenue from delivery platforms has led to a burden of fees. As of October last year, the percentage of fees accounted for 24% of the revenue from delivery platforms, which is an increase of 6.9 percentage points (P) compared to 17.1% a year ago.
The platform fees consist of ▲delivery fees (39.2%) ▲intermediary fees (30.8%) ▲advertising expenses (19.7%). The Seoul Metropolitan Government noted, "As competition for higher visibility within delivery apps intensifies, advertising expense costs are increasing," adding that "this is acting as an additional burden for store owners."
Additionally, the average fee rate for mobile gift certificates, which have seen increased usage recently for gifting, is shown to be 7.2%. It was surveyed that half (42.5%) of store owners bear this fee entirely.
In response, the Seoul Metropolitan Government plans to develop a 'Delivery Platform Win-Win Index' to monitor the fee structure and transactions of delivery platforms in the second half of this year. The win-win index will consist of objective numerical data and reflect the perceptions of store owners to induce improvements for platforms with high concerns about unfairness.
Kim Myung-sun, head of the Fair Economy Division of the Seoul Metropolitan Government, said, "We will establish fair and sustainable win-win policies and actively support the management stability of store owners."
