A man surnamed Won in his 60s, who set fire to a train on Seoul Metro Line 5, has been transferred to trial while in custody.
On the 25th, the Seoul Southern District Prosecutor's Office 'Subway Line 5 Arson Case' dedicated investigation team (Head of Team Director General Son Sang-hui) announced that they have indicted Mr. Won (67) on charges of attempted murder, arson on a current train, and violating the Railway Safety Act.
Mr. Won is accused of having splashed gasoline and ignited his clothing inside a train running through the Han River undersea tunnel section between Yeouinaru Station and Mapo Station on the morning of the 31st of last month around 8:40 a.m.
As a result of the fire, 22 passengers were injured due to smoke inhalation and were transported to hospitals. 129 others received treatment at the scene. Property damage amounted to 330 million won, including part of one subway train being burned.
Mr. Won was transferred to prosecutors in custody by the police on the 9th. He reportedly stated to the police that he set the fire out of dissatisfaction with the results of his divorce proceedings.
