The special prosecutor for insurrection filed an arrest warrant for former President Yoon Suk-yeol on the 24th, to which Yoon's side responded, saying, "If a summons notification comes in accordance with proper procedures, we will cooperate with the investigation," while noting that "the surprise request for an arrest warrant by the special prosecutor is unjust."
Yoon's legal team claimed that the special prosecutor filed an arrest warrant at the Seoul Central District Court that afternoon, stating, "We were planning to respond to investigations after coordinating schedules since the inception of the special prosecutor's office; however, the special prosecutor unexpectedly filed an arrest warrant without any prior requests for attendance or summons notifications."
They added, "The special prosecutor's immediate request for an arrest warrant right after its establishment is unjust, and we would like to clarify that former President Yoon will actively respond to any future summons requests made by the special prosecutor in accordance with proper procedures."
Earlier, Yoon's side stated, "We do not recognize the special prosecutor, so we will not comply with unconstitutional procedures."
Yoon's side argued that during the trial held the previous day regarding charges of being the leader of the insurrection, "The special prosecutor law infringes on the right to a fair trial" and that "there has never been a precedent in history where a specific political faction recommends a special prosecutor, and a president from the same party appoints them and re-exercises investigative authority," and therefore they cannot recognize the special prosecutor.
Yoon's defense team is expected to hold a related meeting that day to discuss future countermeasures.
Earlier, the special prosecutor for insurrection believed that it had been confirmed that Yoon would not respond to future summons notifications, considering that Yoon had failed to comply with two requests for attendance from the police and had not appeared after the investigation began on the 19th. They explained that they proceeded with securing Yoon's New Recruit for necessary suspect questioning, citing charges including obstruction of the Special Public Service.
The decision regarding the issuance of the arrest warrant for former President Yoon is expected to be made as early as late that night.
