Jeon Jun-kyung, the former vice president of the Democratic Institute, who is facing a second trial on charges of receiving bribes worth 800 million won from real estate developers in Baekhyeon-dong, has reportedly applied for bail on the 24th. Previously, Jeon was sentenced to 2 years and 6 months in prison at the first trial in April and was taken into custody.
On the 18th, Jeon applied for bail to the Seoul High Court Criminal Division 1, presided over by Director General Yoon Seong-sik. The bail hearing is scheduled for the 27th. On the same day, the first trial of the appeal in this case is also expected to be held.
Jeon was indicted without detention last April on charges of receiving 782.08 million won in cash and a Genesis sedan from seven real estate development companies from July 2015 to March last year under the pretext of facilitating complaints and local government permits. It was investigated that among this, 100 million won and the sedan were received from Jeong Ba-ul, chairman of Asia Developer, as a bribe for lobbying a public official responsible for real estate development permits in the Sanggal district of Yongin, Gyeonggi Province. The prosecution reportedly identified Jeon's bribery allegations while tracking Jeong's financial flow during the investigation of the Baekhyeon-dong preferential development bribery case.
Jeon is also charged with accepting 26 million won in bribes from a hot spring development company while serving as a commissioner for the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission from January to July 2017 related to committee activities such as deciding on civil complaints. Jeon served as a commissioner for the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission from 2015 to 2018, as a private member of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Regulatory Innovation and Active Administration Committee in 2019 to 2020, and as the vice president of the Democratic Institute, the think tank of the Democratic Party of Korea, from 2021 to 2023.
The first trial sentenced Jeon to 2 years and 6 months in prison and ordered his immediate detention last April. It also imposed a fine of 52 million won and an additional recovery order of over 800 million won. The first trial court found Jeon guilty on all charges.
Both Jeon and the prosecution appealed the first trial ruling.
