This year, the second typhoon 'Spot' (SEPAT) has occurred. The Korea Meteorological Administration announced that 'Spot' formed at sea about 1,320 kilometers southeast of Tokyo, Japan, at 9 a.m. on the 23rd.
Typhoon Spot is not expected to have a direct impact on Korea. This typhoon is forecasted to strengthen to Category 1 (wind speeds of 17 to 24 m/s) in the southern Pacific Ocean off Japan and is expected to dissipate, weakening back to a tropical depression, around noon on the 25th.
Typhoon names are assigned sequentially based on names previously submitted by the 14 member countries of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Typhoon Committee. 'Spot' is a name submitted by Malaysia, referring to a type of freshwater fish from the family of seabasses.
