A Gumi city council member who assaulted a city council official for not being given an opportunity to deliver a congratulatory message at a local event has ultimately retained their position.
During the regular session of the Gumi City Council held on the 23rd, a disciplinary proposal against council member Ahn was presented and put to a vote. The level of discipline was ultimately decided as '30 days of suspension from attendance.' Earlier, the council's ethics special committee had voted for Ahn's 'expulsion' on the 9th.
The session was conducted behind closed doors, and as a result, Ahn will be able to keep their position until the end of their term in June 2026.
The controversy erupted during the opening ceremony of the 'Sweet Romantic Night Market' on the 23rd of last month. Council member Ahn reportedly yelled at city council official Mr. A, saying, 'There was a lack of protocol consideration,' and slapped him after failing to deliver a congratulatory message at the event.
After the incident became known, council member Ahn apologized through Facebook, expressing that they had acted 'recklessly' and also left the People Power Party, the political party they were affiliated with.
The Gumi City Public Employees Union has reported council member Ahn to the police as of the 26th of last month.
