Lee Jae-myung's government has nominated Kang Sun-woo (47·photo) from the Democratic Party of Korea as the first Minister of Gender Equality and Family, who is regarded as a "policy expert" active in protecting the rights of socially vulnerable groups such as children and the disabled.
The presidential office on the 23rd designated Kang as the candidate for the minister of gender equality and family, praising her as a "policy expert" who has worked to protect the rights of socially vulnerable groups while serving as the secretary of the Health and Welfare Committee and as a commissioner of the Gender Equality and Family Committee, noting that she will resolve societal conflicts based on communication and listening.
Born in 1978, Kang Sun-woo is from Daegu and graduated from Kyungsang Women's High School and the Department of English Education at Ewha Womans University. She obtained a master's degree in consumer human development from the same university and a doctoral degree in human development and family studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She then worked as an assistant professor at South Dakota State University from 2012 to 2016.
Kang ran for the Democratic Party's proportional representative in the 20th general election, receiving the 29th spot but was not elected.
