Police arrested Yoon Jeong-woo (48) on suspicion of murdering a woman he had been stalking.
The Daegu Seongseo Police Station announced on the 20th that it had sent Mr. Yoon to the prosecutor's office on charges of violating the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes. Mr. Yoon allegedly broke into the victim's apartment on the 10th at around 3:30 a.m. by climbing the gas pipes and wielded a weapon to kill the woman before fleeing.
He was on the run for four days after the crime until he was caught by the police in front of a container warehouse in Jochiwon-eup, Sejong City, on the 14th.
On the 16th, police arrested Mr. Yoon on murder charges, but they changed the charges to that of retaliatory murder, believing it was related to a previous case where the victim had filed a complaint. Retaliatory murder carries a heavier penalty under the criminal code, with a minimum prison sentence of over 10 years.
Earlier, a warrant was requested for Mr. Yoon for allegedly threatening the victim with a weapon a month ago, but the court dismissed it. The police had previously installed intelligent closed-circuit television (CCTV) at the victim's residence as a protective measure.
