Amid the government's request to cease the distribution of leaflets to North Korea, the Family Assembly Abducted to North Korea, which has distributed such leaflets three times this year, has announced plans to hold a public event at Imjingak in Paju City.
On the 12th, the Family Assembly Abducted to North Korea stated, "On the afternoon of the 11th at around 2:30 p.m., we visited the Paju Police Station and completed the notification for a gathering called 'Sending News of Abducted Families' from June 14 to July 10."
The gathering location is behind the fence of the Imjingak Peace Land, and the reported number of participants is 30, with the gathering intended to last for 24 hours. The organization explained that the purpose of the event is "to convey warnings and appeals from families abducted to North Korea and their supporters."
Earlier, the Family Assembly Abducted to North Korea distributed leaflets to North Korea on April 27 in Paju City, May 8 in Cheorwon County, Gangwon Province, and June 2 in border areas of Paju City.
The Ministry of Unification did not request restraint on the distribution of leaflets to North Korea, considering the emphasis on freedom of expression in the Constitutional Court's decision in September 2023. However, since the change of administration, the Ministry of Unification has changed its stance and requested the Family Assembly Abducted to North Korea to cease distribution.
The police have reportedly set a strict response policy, considering that it was difficult to apply aviation safety laws when the weight of the leaflets was less than 2 kg, while reviewing potential violations of other laws.
In this regard, officials from the Paju Police Station are reported to have met with Representative Choi in Seocho District, Seoul, that afternoon to deliver a notice restricting outdoor assemblies.
