Acting Commissioner Lee Ho-young of the Korean National Police Agency chaired a meeting on disaster preparedness for the summer on the 11th and reviewed the police response system.
The Korean National Police Agency noted that this is a follow-up measure after President Lee Jae-myung mentioned during the safety inspection meeting on the 5th the need to identify the causes of disasters in advance and establish countermeasures.
The police plan to focus on preventive patrols at 958 underpasses and 8,694 vulnerable areas across the regions in preparation for intense rainfall due to the monsoon forecasted from mid this month and atmospheric instability. If the Ministry of the Interior and Safety establishes a central disaster safety countermeasure headquarters, it will immediately operate a disaster situation room and activate emergency operational systems, including declaring disaster emergencies.
If 112 reports are received or there is a possibility of casualties, emergency reporting orders, known as 'Code 1', will be issued along with the dissemination of information to relevant agencies such as local governments. This is to ensure that the nearest patrol car and personnel can respond quickly, regardless of local responsibility.
The police also plan to actively support forced evacuations for individuals who refuse to evacuate upon requests from local governments, and they will take proactive measures to search evacuation areas, control access to hazardous locations, and prevent crimes that infringe on the livelihoods of residents in affected areas.
