An incident occurred in which a rifle was discovered by a civilian three days after it was returned in a rental car while still on the K-2 rifle. It was determined that the military had not recognized the loss of the firearm until the civilian reported it.
According to military authorities on the 10th, a non-commissioned officer from an Army base in Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province escorted a New Recruit who had just graduated from the boot camp using a rental car on the 5th. The New Recruit was carrying a K-2 rifle issued at the new unit, but after arriving at the new base, he left the rifle in the car.
The non-commissioned officer who finished the escort was also unaware that the New Recruit’s rifle was in the car when he returned the rental vehicle.
It has been reported that the unit did not recognize the fact that the New Recruit's rifle was missing for some time. Then, three days later, on the 8th, they only learned of the incident after receiving a police report from a civilian stating that "there is a rifle in the rental car."
The unit dispatched personnel after receiving the report and retrieved the K-2 rifle from the rental car.
The Army stated that its investigative agency is looking into the circumstances, and it will take necessary follow-up actions based on the investigation results.
