Chief Justice Jo Hee-dae said on the 5th, "I hope a public forum will be created" regarding the bill to increase the number of Supreme Court justices, which is being spearheaded by the Democratic Party of Korea. The Democratic Party of Korea passed a revision of the Court Organization Act in the National Assembly's bill review subcommittee the previous day, which aims to increase the number of Supreme Court justices from 14 to 30.
On the day, while heading to the Supreme Court, Chief Justice Jo was asked by reporters if he planned to submit an opinion letter to the National Assembly regarding the bill to increase the number of Supreme Court justices, to which he replied, "Yes." He added, "It is necessary to continuously explain to the National Assembly what the original functions of the Supreme Court are as stipulated by the Constitution and laws, and what the most desirable direction of reform for the people is and to cooperate with them."
When reporters asked, "Do you think all newly increased Supreme Court justices can be appointed within the Lee Jae-myung government?" Chief Justice Jo stated, "I plan to continue discussions with the National Assembly through the Court Administration. As for the question, 'Do you think simply increasing the number of Supreme Court justices can solve issues like delays in trials?', he said, "There are various factors involved, and it is a matter that concerns the long-term future of the country." He added, "Since this is an issue that has been discussed for a long time, I plan to provide further explanations through the administration and continue the discussions."
