Starting June 1, Seoul Station Plaza and nearby roads will be designated as non-smoking areas. A fine of 100,000 won will be imposed for smoking here.
According to reports from the Jung-gu and Yongsan-gu on the 29th, the non-smoking areas will cover a total of 56,800 square meters, including approximately 43,000 square meters around Seoul Station Plaza and the station, and about 13,800 square meters around the Seoul Station Bus Transfer Center. Smokers must use the smoking booth near Exit 1 of Seoul Station, operated by Korea Railroad Corporation (Korail).
Since March, Jung-gu and Yongsan-gu have been operating a grace period. Starting in June, a full crackdown will begin. For two months in June and July, Jung-gu, Yongsan-gu, and Namdaemun Police Station will form a 'Seoul Station Plaza non-smoking area enforcement team' to conduct concentrated inspections.
Jung-gu and Yongsan-gu will also conduct promotional activities to inform about the designation of non-smoking areas. To commemorate the 38th World No Tobacco Day (May 31), a campaign titled 'Seoul Station Plaza non-smoking area designation notification' will be held on June 5 at Seoul Station Plaza, involving the city of Seoul, Yongsan-gu, Seoul Integrated Health Promotion Support Group, Seoul Smoking Cessation Center, and Korea Railroad Corporation. Various media such as electronic billboards, media boards, and ground stickers will also be used to announce the designation of non-smoking areas and encourage voluntary participation from citizens.
