A fire broke out in an old building near Sewoon Sangga in Jung-gu, Seoul, and the blaze was brought under control after about 5 hours. A man in his 70s was transported to the hospital after inhaling smoke from the incident.

Kim Chun-soo, head of the administrative department of the Central Fire Station in Seoul, said during a briefing held around 8:25 p.m. on the 28th, “All efforts were made to extinguish the fire, and the large fire was contained by 8:20 p.m.”

The fire department plans to conduct overnight operations to fully extinguish the embers. A total of 446 personnel and 100 pieces of equipment were mobilized for the containment efforts.

As a result of this fire, a first stage response was issued at 3:49 p.m., and the response stage was escalated to stage 2 at 4:37 p.m. The response stage was later lowered back to stage 1 at 6:42 p.m.

The fire department identified that flames and smoke were caused by an unspecified fire that occurred inside the first floor of the old retail building. One man in his 70s inhaled smoke on the third floor and was transported to a nearby hospital. No other casualties were reported. Of the 74 stores that were operating, 48 stores were affected.

Due to this fire, traffic was completely restricted in the direction of Euljiro 3-ga to Euljiro 4-ga toward City Hall. Smoke also entered nearby subway stations, including Euljiro 4-ga Station, but it was confirmed that train operations were not affected.
