The police are investigating 12 posts threatening presidential candidates. Among these, 6 suspects have been apprehended.
A police official noted at a regular press briefing at the Korean National Police Agency on the 26th that they have received 11 cases related to Democratic Party of Korea candidate Lee Jae-myung, with 1 case transferred, and are investigating 1 case related to Reform Party candidate Lee Jun-seok.
He added, “Among the 12 cases, 6 suspects have been apprehended, 1 suspect has been identified, and 5 are being pursued.” However, this official explained that there has currently been no evidence indicating that these authors intended to actually kill the candidates.
The police stated that there have been no reports or tips regarding allegations of assassination or terrorist threats against the candidate, such as the 'influx of Russian-made firearms' raised by the Democratic Party. They added, “If any clues are confirmed, we plan to investigate quickly and thoroughly.”
Lee Ho-young, the acting chief of the Korean National Police Agency, said, “We are strengthening the security for the presidential candidates by mobilizing all functions, including police special forces and mobile units.” The police plan to enhance security at polling stations with personnel from police stations and mobile units on the 29th and 30th, the days of early voting, and to issue a maximum alert nationwide on the 3rd, the day of the main voting. Issuing this maximum alert allows for the deployment of 100% of police resources, marking the highest level of emergency work.
