A son in his 60s was sentenced to prison for verbally abusing and assaulting his mother, who is in her 90s.

The Chuncheon District Court's Criminal Division 1 (Director General Song Jong-hwan) announced on the 24th that it had sentenced A (62) to 4 months in prison for charges of assault on a lineal ascendant, domestic violence, special threats, attempted arson of a dwelling, and violation of the Welfare of Older Persons Act, and ordered him to complete 40 hours of domestic violence treatment programs.

Last April, while intoxicated and making a scene, A heard his mother B (96) say, "Are you making a scene?" and responded, "Let's die together," attempting to set the house on fire with a lighter. When B took the lighter away, he bit her finger and twisted her wrist. A month later, while completely drunk during the daytime, A pushed B over without any reason, saying, "Die quickly."

The court noted, "Despite having a history of multiple alcohol-related crimes leading to actual imprisonment, he committed the crime again while intoxicated." It further stated that considering factors such as A's efforts to eliminate the root cause by being hospitalized for long-term treatment for alcohol dependence, the sentence was determined, and he was placed in custody on the spot.
