The Ministry of Employment and Labor stated on the 19th that it conducted 49 searches on employers with wage arrears from January to April this year. This is more than three times the number during the same period last year (18 cases).
The ministry also executed 253 arrest warrants and 196 communication warrants from January to April this year. The number of arrest warrants increased by 25.87% compared to the same period last year, while communication warrants increased by 29.95%.
There were cases where wages in arrears were settled immediately as a result of the arrest warrants executed by the ministry. By identifying the location of the employer who withheld wages through communication warrants and then arresting them, the owed wages were settled.
The number of cases under detention investigation also increased to six this year, up 50% from four last year. A ministry official noted that "detention investigations were conducted against employers who maliciously withheld wages from vulnerable groups, including people with intellectual disabilities, foreign workers, and youth."
Vice Minister Kim Min-seok stated, "We will continue various efforts to eradicate wage arrears in the future."
