Lee Cheol-kyu, a member of the People Power Party, has been indicted on charges of marijuana-related offenses involving his son in his 30s.
The Central District Prosecutors' Office (Director General Kim Bo-seong) announced on the 16th that they have arrested and indicted Lee on charges of violating the Act on the Management of Narcotics. His wife, Im, a co-defendant, has been indicted without detention. Lee's middle school classmate, Jeong, and military senior, Kwon, were also indicted.
The couple is accused of attempting to purchase liquid marijuana using the so-called "throwing" method in a flower bed of a building in Seocho-gu, Seoul, in October last year. The seller entrusted the drugs to an intermediary, who would leave the drugs at a specific location for the buyer to pick up. It is known that the couple and one acquaintance tried to buy the drugs using a rental car but failed.
The police received a 112 report at the time and arrived at the scene, discovering the liquid marijuana. After analyzing CCTV footage and other evidence, they identified Lee's identity on January 3 and apprehended Lee and his group on February 25. All of them tested positive for marijuana according to the National Forensic Service's detailed examination results.
Prosecutors found that the couple had purchased synthetic marijuana twice from October last year to February this year and had used it on three occasions.
