The Constitutional Court decided to conclude the hearing of the impeachment trial of Vice Administrator Son Jun-sung, Daegu High Prosecutor's Office, with a second hearing on the 20th. Vice Administrator Son has been impeached over the so-called 'allegation of instigating a complaint,' but was acquitted in a criminal trial on the same charges.
On the 13th, the Constitutional Court held the first hearing in the impeachment trial of Vice Administrator Son. This came 529 days after the impeachment motion was initiated by the Democratic Party of Korea in December 2023.
The reason for Vice Administrator Son's impeachment is related to the 'allegation of instigating a complaint,' which claims that former President Yoon Suk-yeol, while serving as the Prosecutor General before the 2020 general elections, allegedly instigated the People Power Party to file complaints against individuals such as Yoo Si-min and former Democratic Party of Korea lawmaker Choi Kang-wook for defaming his and his wife's honor.
In this regard, Vice Administrator Son was indicted in May 2022 on charges of delivering complaint documents concerning ruling party figures to Kim Woong, a former lawmaker and candidate for the People Power Party at the time. He received a one-year prison sentence in the first trial, but this was overturned in the second trial, and the Supreme Court confirmed his acquittal on the 24th of last month.
During the first hearing at the Constitutional Court, Vice Administrator Son said, 'I fought vigorously to prove my innocence during the criminal trial, and my acquittal was confirmed by the Supreme Court,' and requested that the court reach a 'wise conclusion.'
The Constitutional Court intended to conclude the hearing of Vice Administrator Son's impeachment trial with the first hearing, but decided to hold an additional hearing at the request of the National Assembly. The next hearing is scheduled for the 20th.
