Fuel oil has leaked from a naval ship off the coast of Jinhae, Gyeongnam, prompting the coast guard and navy to carry out cleanup operations.
According to the Jinhae Coast Guard, a report was received that fuel oil leaked during a transfer operation from a naval ship with a capacity of 2,500 tons that was anchored near Somodo in Jinhae-gu, Changwon, around 9:49 a.m. on the 11th.
It is reported that about 10,000 liters of fuel oil leaked into the sea within a radius of about 500 meters due to this incident. The navy believes the leak occurred while oil was being sent from the ship's fuel tank to various equipment on board the ship.
The Jinhae Coast Guard is conducting emergency maritime pollution cleanup operations with eight vessels, including patrol boats, coast guard rescue teams, and coastal rescue vessels, as well as 13 navy ships. The cleanup operation is currently about 80% complete.
The navy stated it will work with relevant agencies to determine the cause and circumstances of the incident, and will take severe action based on the investigation results. Additionally, plans are in place to establish measures to prevent a recurrence of similar incidents.
