Rain is expected nationwide on the 3rd, the weekend when the May golden holiday officially begins.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, the entire country will be mostly cloudy until the afternoon, with rain expected in most areas. In the high mountainous regions of Gangwon Province at altitudes above 1,000 meters, a mix of rain and snow is also anticipated.
In particular, a low-pressure system accompanied by rain clouds is expected to pass eastward over the southern West Sea, resulting in slightly higher precipitation in the southern regions. Gusty winds and thunder are also expected primarily in Jeolla and Gyeongnam provinces into the afternoon, and caution should be exercised regarding facility management and safety accidents.
The expected precipitation is 5 to 10 millimeters in the metropolitan area, the five islands of the West Sea, inland and mountainous regions of Gangwon, Ulleungdo and Dokdo, and Jeju Island; 5 to 20 millimeters in Chungcheong province, Daegu, and Gyeongbuk; 10 to 40 millimeters in Jeolla province; and less than 5 millimeters along the eastern coast of Gangwon.
The daytime high temperature on that day is expected to be between 14 and 19 degrees, which is lower than the normal range of 19.9 to 25.1 degrees, making it somewhat chilly. On Sunday, the 4th, the weather is expected to be mostly clear nationwide, with morning lows between 4 and 12 degrees and daytime highs between 17 and 23 degrees.
However, the briefly clear sky on the 4th is expected to become cloudy again on the Children's Day holiday of the 5th, with rain starting from the evening. Morning lows on the 5th are expected to be between 5 and 12 degrees, and daytime highs between 17 and 23 degrees.
Strong winds are also expected, particularly in the southern regions. On that day, strong winds, with gusts reaching speeds of 55 kilometers per hour (70 kilometers per hour in mountainous areas), are expected in the southern coastal areas and Jeju Island, and on the 4th, in the northeastern mountainous regions of Gangwon and along the eastern coast and Gyeongnam coastline.
Due to the influence of the low pressure, rough seas are also anticipated. In the southern part of the West Sea, strong winds are expected to continue until late afternoon of that day, and in the outer waters south of Jeju, winds are expected to blow at speeds of 30 to 55 kilometers per hour (9 to 15 meters per second) until the morning of the 4th. In particular, waves are expected to rise to heights of 1.5 to 3.5 meters, so ships engaged in navigation or fishing should exercise special caution.
