Kang Dong-hee, a former professional basketball coach who was sentenced to prison in the first trial for allegedly embezzling funds from a basketball class, has filed an appeal against the verdict.

According to the legal community on the 30th, Kang's attorney submitted an appeal to the Incheon District Court on the 28th. Kang was prosecuted for embezzlement and breach of trust and received a sentence of 1 year and 2 months in the first trial. It has been reported that others who were sentenced to prison terms and suspended sentences on similar charges have also appealed the verdict.

The prosecution has also appealed, claiming that the first trial's sentencing was too lenient compared to the crime. In the first trial's conclusion hearing, the prosecution requested a 2-year prison sentence for Kang. With both the defendants and the prosecution appealing, the second trial of this case is expected to be held at the Incheon District Court.

Kang and others have been indicted for using over 160 million won of the operating funds for personal use or for purposes other than intended while jointly operating the basketball class from May to October 2018. They are also charged with causing damage by paying over 10 million won from company funds for legal consulting fees for establishing a new company and over 10 million won as a deposit for a transfer agreement for relocating the new company's office.
