The National Coalition for the Elimination of Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities (Jeonjangyeon) staged a protest at the Hyehwa Station platform on Line 4 of the Seoul subway on the morning of the 23rd, but was chased away by the subway authorities. This marked the second consecutive day of the same incident following the previous day.
Fifteen members of Jeonjangyeon began a 'subway promotion campaign' around 8 a.m. at the Hyehwa Station platform heading towards Dongdaemun. In response, about 30 employees of the Seoul Transportation Corporation surrounded the protesters with shields, while about 20 police officers were stationed in front of the stairs.
As Jeonjangyeon started their protest, the Seoul Transportation Corporation requested that they leave the station, stating it was an illegal protest. When the protesters refused to comply, the corporation called in subway security around 8:16 a.m. to forcibly remove Lee Hyung-sook, co-representative of Jeonjangyeon, from the station.
The remaining participants continued to face off but left the platform by themselves around 8:27 a.m. Jeonjangyeon disbanded the subway protest and moved towards the Seoul National University Hospital in the Yulgok-dong area of Jongno-gu to continue their rally.
Jeonjangyeon had also been forcibly removed after conducting a subway promotion campaign at the same location the previous day. On the 21st, they resumed their morning protest for the first time in almost a year, causing disruptions in the operations of Line 4 trains and inconveniencing citizens. The Seoul Transportation Corporation has been responding strongly to Jeonjangyeon's protests since the following day.
