Jeollanam-do has decided to establish the largest offshore wind farm in South Korea in the waters off Sinan County by 2033.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced on the 22nd that it will designate and publicize the 'Jeonnam Sinan Offshore Wind Power Project' as a renewable energy cluster after deliberation and resolution by the Renewable Energy Policy Council. The project involves an investment of 20 trillion won to establish 10 offshore wind farms.

The capacity of this offshore wind power facility is 3.2 gigawatts (GW), equivalent to three nuclear power plants. It is the largest in the Asia-Pacific region in terms of a single facility and is estimated to be the second largest in the world, according to Jeollanam-do.

Jeollanam-do plans to form an electricity system council involving local residents in areas where transmission lines pass to build transmission and transformation facilities for the large-scale power generation facility. It has also presented a blueprint to attract corporations related to offshore wind, such as substructures, towers, and cables, and to create an offshore wind equipment industry cluster in nearby areas, including Mokpo New Port.

Kim Yeong-rok, the governor of Jeollanam-do, said, “In the future, we will attract 100 turbine, blade, and substructure manufacturing corporations to the Mokpo New Port and Haenam Hwahwan Industrial Complex designated as a development special zone, creating 30,000 jobs.” He added, “We will supply 30 GW of offshore wind power across Jeollanam-do, making the province a capital of South Korea's energy industry and a hub for offshore wind power in the Asia-Pacific region.”
