The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family noted on the 21st that it will start a support program for education activity expenses targeting 53,000 children from low-income multicultural families starting in May this year.
The education activity expenses will be used for purchasing teaching materials for multicultural family children, utilizing study rooms, purchasing materials for fine arts, physical education, and vocational training practices, and supporting certifications.
The government has been carrying out the education activity expense support program since last year to expand educational opportunities for multicultural family children, strengthen their career capabilities, and alleviate learning gaps.
This year's education activity expense support is targeted at multicultural households with children aged 7 to 18 who are below the median income of 100%. Parents, children, or relatives within the third degree can apply for the program.
The support amount is 400,000 won per year for elementary school students, 500,000 won for middle school students, and 600,000 won for high school students. All will be paid in NH Nonghyup Card (Chaeum) credits.
The government will accept applications for education activity expenses twice this year. The first round is from May 2 to 30, and the second round is from July 1 to 31. Those who apply in the first round will receive the education activity expenses in June, and those in the second round will receive them in August. All funds can be used until the end of November and will expire thereafter.
Choi Sung-ji, the family policy director at the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, said, "I hope the education activity expense support program for multicultural family children can serve as a stepping stone to nurture their future capabilities."
