An accident occurred in which parts such as the machine gun and fuel tank mounted on the Air Force light attack aircraft KA-1, which was in training, became detached and fell.
The Air Force stated that at around 8:22 p.m. on the 18th, an accident occurred in which two gunpods and two empty fuel tanks detached from the KA-1 (airborne command attack aircraft) belonging to the Wonju base during nighttime training over Pyeongchang County, Gangwon Province.
The gunpod is a type of case that carries a machine gun, and it fell along with the 500 rounds of 12.7mm live ammunition that were embedded in the pod. At the time of the accident, four KA-1s were in flight, and the detachment of objects occurred from one aircraft.
The Air Force explained, "The point where the objects fell is a mountainous area, and it has currently been assessed that there is no civilian damage." The Air Force is investigating the exact cause of the accident by forming an accident investigation committee chaired by the Commissioner of the Air Force Staff.
