The government is expected to announce on the 17th a plan to revert next year's medical school capacity back to the previous level of 3,058.
According to the education sector, Acting President Han Duck-soo and officials from the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health and Welfare, and others held a closed meeting at the Government Seoul Complex and made this decision.
Earlier, the Ministry of Education noted that it could revert the number of medical school admissions for the 2026 academic year to 3,058, assuming that all medical students would return. This was accepted after the deans of the medical schools submitted a proposal stating that they would ensure the return of medical students if the admissions were frozen.
The Ministry of Education stated several times that, unlike last year, there will be no academic flexibility this year and that medical students must return to classes. However, it is reported that most medical students have not returned to classes after paying their tuition.
