On the 10th, a wildfire that occurred in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) in Hyeonnae-myeon, Goseong-gun, is undergoing firefighting efforts for the second consecutive day after re-igniting the previous day.
According to forest authorities on the 12th, around 7:30 a.m. the previous day, a wildfire that had been extinguished in the southern DMZ of Daegang-ri, Hyeonnae-myeon, Goseong-gun, re-ignited around 2:40 p.m., approximately seven hours later.
The wildfire in the DMZ has made firefighting efforts involving personnel and equipment somewhat challenging.
In response, forest authorities are conducting firefighting operations with the cooperation of the military by deploying one helicopter from the Korea Forest Service and one leased helicopter.
This wildfire started on the 10th from the northern side and spread southward due to the wind. According to local governments and forest authorities, a wildfire occurred in the southern DMZ around 5:04 p.m. on the 10th, and two helicopters were dispatched, completing the firefighting around 7:30 a.m. the following day, but the fire reignited that day.
As of 2 p.m. that day, the firefighting rate, including the northern region, is estimated to be 50 percent.
Authorities plan to investigate the exact cause and scale of damage as soon as the firefighting efforts are completed.
