Nine out of 10 Seoul citizens have been found to agree with the extension of the retirement age. Additionally, Seoul citizens perceive the elderly age to be around 70 years.
The Seoul City government announced the results of the '2024 Seoul Survey', which contains this information.
The Seoul Survey is a study designed to understand the perceptions and values of Seoul citizens in response to changes in social environments. It has been released annually since 2003.
In this survey, Seoul introduced the question, 'What age do Seoul citizens consider to be the elderly age?' for the first time. This aims to prepare response measures according to the demographic changes in an ultra-aged society.
As a result, the average age that 5,000 Seoul citizens consider to be elderly was 70.2 years. By age, those aged 70-74 made up the largest percentage at 51.7%. This was followed by those aged 75 and older (23.3%), 65-69 years (18.1%), 60-64 years (6.6%), and under 60 years (0.3%).
Moreover, 87.8% of Seoul citizens indicated that they agree with the extension of the retirement age. The appropriate retirement age is considered to be 65-69 years (40.5%). The most common response regarding appropriate monthly living expenses after retirement was over 2.5 million won (53.3%).
Kang Ok-hyeon, the director of the Seoul Digital City Bureau, said, 'We will utilize the results of the Seoul Survey as foundational data for city management and policy formulation to provide citizens with a better everyday life.'
