The North Jeolla Province has officially begun its international campaign to attract the 2036 Jeonju Summer Olympics.
Kim Gwan-young, the governor of North Jeolla Province, met with Thomas Bach, Chairperson of the International Olympic Committee, on the 8th (local time) at the IOC headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland. Yoo Seung-min, the president of the Korean Sports Council, also accompanied Kim to strengthen communication with the international sports community.
During the meeting, Governor Kim and Chairperson Yoo conveyed their strong commitment to attracting the 2036 Summer Olympics.
In particular, they emphasized the suitability of Jeonju as a host city based on its historical and cultural assets and sustainable infrastructure.
They also met with Chairperson Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović of the Future Olympics Commission and Christopher Dubi, the IOC Director of Olympic Games, to explain the event concept and preparation direction for the Jeonju Summer Olympics.
The Korean delegation confirmed the IOC's guidelines, processes, and timelines that will be essential for their upcoming bidding activities.
Based on this, they expect to establish a systematic bidding strategy that meets international standards for attracting the 2036 Olympics within the country.
The IOC applies a 'dialogue method' for selecting host cities for the Olympics.
Accordingly, the IOC Future Olympics Commission evaluates each bidding project in the 'sustained consultation' phase and prepares recommendations.
The final recommendations are submitted to the IOC Executive Board, which reviews them and decides whether to initiate 'focused consultations' with specific cities before presenting them to the IOC General Assembly for a vote by all IOC Commissioners to determine the host of the Olympics.
