The government has decided to establish a flood risk detection system utilizing closed-circuit television (CCTV), artificial intelligence (AI), and the Internet of Things (IoT) in preparation for typhoons and heavy rains this summer.
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced on the 9th that it held a meeting of the "Summer Natural Disaster Preparedness Task Force (TF)" to discuss pre-emptive measures against wind and flood damage. The government plans to check related matters biweekly with relevant ministries until early June, before the onset of the rainy season.
The Ministry of Environment has decided to pilot intelligent CCTV for rapid flood risk recognition and to enhance flood forecasting using AI. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport will manage road slopes using IoT sensors on slopes and expand and install evacuation guidance facilities in preparation for flooding in underground passages.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety plans to establish infrastructure for preventing secondary damage, focusing on areas weakened by recent large-scale forest fires, as well as measures to protect residents. The Korea Forest Service plans to urgently assess the risk of landslides in forest fire-affected areas and will focus on restoration projects and reorganization of resident evacuation systems.
