An acid explosion occurred in a laboratory at Hanyang University, injuring four students.
According to the Seoul Seongdong Fire Station on the 9th, the explosion occurred around 9:01 p.m. the previous day in a laboratory on the third floor of the new materials engineering building in the Haengdang-dong area of Seongdong District, where students were disposing of sulfuric acid.
One student was hospitalized with serious burns to the face. Another student also suffered facial burns and was taken to the hospital but was not seriously injured. Two more students went to the hospital for treatment after inhaling smoke. Three students with minor injuries returned home after treatment.
When the accident occurred, about 50 people inside the building evacuated on their own. Some equipment was destroyed by the fire.
Fire authorities deployed 39 personnel and 11 vehicles to extinguish the fire. The fire was completely put out around 9:54 p.m., approximately 50 minutes later, and operations to remove the sulfuric acid were carried out. It was determined that sulfuric acid had not leaked outside. Police and fire authorities are investigating the exact cause of the accident.
