Nine out of 10 teenagers were found to be watching short-form videos, as reported on the 1st. The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family announced the results of the '2024 survey on youth media use and harmful environmental conditions' on this day. A total of 15,053 students from the 4th to 6th grades of elementary school and middle and high school were surveyed. The survey is conducted every two years.

According to the survey, the medium most frequently used by teenagers in the past year was short-form videos (94.2%). Other media used included TV broadcasts (89.7%), online video services (OTT·83.7%), social media (SNS·69.5%), and printed books (69%). Nearly half of the teenagers (49.9%) used generative artificial intelligence (AI). The percentage of teenagers who watched adult content (47.5%→26.5%) decreased compared to the previous survey.

The number of teenagers who experienced violence, such as verbal abuse (16.3%→22.6%), increased. The percentage of teenagers who were victims of sexual violence (5.5%→5.3%) slightly decreased. Most of the perpetrators were people attending the same school (62.1% for violence and 60% for sexual violence). The rate of teenagers who consumed alcohol (13.7%→12.1%) and smoked (4.2%→2.4%) in the past month decreased. Some teenagers also used room cafes (12.6%) or medical narcotic analgesics (0.3%) in the past year.

The percentage of teenagers who worked part-time (7.3%→6.25%) decreased. The payment method shifted from hourly wages (71.3%→41.9%) to monthly salaries (10%→31.1%). The percentage of those who did not have a work contract (49.4%→36.4%) decreased. Hwang Yoon-jung, director of the Youth Family Policy Office at the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, noted, "We will strengthen policies to protect teenagers from harmful environments."
