The Ministry of Education announced on the 1st that it has selected three local governments, including Sacheon in South Gyeongsang Province, Goryeong in North Gyeongsang Province, and Jung-gu in Daejeon, as lifelong learning cities this year.

A lifelong learning city refers to a community that has formed a learning environment where anyone in the area can pursue desired learning by operating lifelong education programs. The government has been selecting lifelong learning cities every year through a public competition since 2001. Currently, there are a total of 201 cities.

The Ministry of Education plans to support each newly selected local government with operational funds for lifelong education projects ranging from 50 million to 60 million won. Through this, the local governments will implement a variety of projects tailored to their areas.

Additionally, the government plans to support the strengthening of lifelong learning programs in 15 regions this year. These 15 regions will be selected from the existing lifelong learning cities. These areas will receive operational funds ranging from 30 million to 50 million won.

Choi Eun-hee, head of the Talent Policy Bureau of the Ministry of Education, noted, "We will actively support the newly designated lifelong learning cities to establish themselves stably."
